Here, we delve into the essential accessory no guitarist can do without—the humble guitar pick. This small tool plays a pivotal role in shaping the sound and playability of a guitar, influencing everything from tone to technique.
**The Evolution of Guitar Picks**
The history of guitar picks is as rich and varied as the music they help create. Originally, musicians used feather quills or small pieces of wood to strum strings. As musical styles evolved, so did the materials and designs of picks. By the 20th century, celluloid became a popular material, paving the way for an array of shapes and sizes suited to different musical genres and playing styles.
**Icons Who Strummed Their Way to Fame**
Guitar picks have been wielded by some of the most iconic musicians in history. Legends like Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, and Stevie Ray Vaughan each had their unique picking style that contributed significantly to their distinctive sounds. These artists showed that a simple pick could be transformed into an artist's tool for expression.

Tortex picks, often hailed as the quintessential guitar pick, have carved their niche in the music world due to their durability, playability, and unique texture. Originating from a need for a consistent and reliable alternative to tortoiseshell picks—which were banned in the 1970s due to environmental concerns—Tortex picks were introduced by Jim Dunlop. These picks are made from Delrin, a material known for its ability to mimic the feel of natural tortoiseshell closely. The characteristic memory and flexibility of Tortex picks allow them to return to their original shape after bending, providing a consistent playing experience that many guitarists prefer.
The journey of Tortex picks began in 1981 when Jim Dunlop created these iconic plectrums as an answer to the discontinuation of tortoiseshell products. The name “Tortex” itself is a blend of “tortoise” and “Delrin,” highlighting its origins and material composition. Over the years, these picks have evolved into various shapes and thicknesses catering to diverse musical styles and player preferences. Their matte finish not only enhances grip but also contributes to a warm, rounded musical tone that has become synonymous with many genres of music.
Tortex picks have been favored by numerous legendary musicians across different music genres. Iconic players like Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, James Hetfield of Metallica, and Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters have all wielded Tortex picks during their careers. These artists’ choice in using Tortex has cemented its reputation as a versatile tool capable of delivering performance at the highest levels.
In addition to international stars, several Irish artists have also embraced Tortex for its quality and reliability. Renowned Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher often used similar style picks during his performances, influencing subsequent generations within Ireland’s vibrant music scene.
Tortex picks are incredibly versatile and can be used by guitarists of all ages—from young beginners who are just starting out on their musical journey to seasoned professionals looking for precision and reliability in their play. The variety in sizes (ranging from thin 0.50mm for light strumming to thick 1.14mm for aggressive playing styles) makes them suitable for different skill levels and playing techniques.
For younger players especially, lighter gauge Tortex picks can be easier on the fingers while still allowing control over dynamics and rhythm—a crucial aspect when developing foundational skills.

The enhanced control offered by Tortex picks can help you achieve cleaner tones and smoother transitions between notes on an electric guitar.
On the other hand, acoustic guitars often benefit from the warmth and richness of tone that Tortex picks provide. Their superior grip allows for greater accuracy when strumming chords or picking individual notes on an acoustic instrument.
